What are climbing holds made of?

Climbing holds can generally be separated into two categories. Those made of natural materials, and man-made chemical based grips. The most common form of climbing hold is made from a wide range of plastics. In the early years of the climbing hold industry, polyester resin was the most common material. It was selected for its low price, high level or rigidity and resistance to long-term wear and tear. In todays climbing gyms, expect to find climbing grips made mainly from semi-rigid flexible polyurethane. This material is more prominent due to a number of advantages it poses over polyester resin.
